THE KHARKOV ROLLBAHN

In early August 1943, the German XI Corps
was delaying through a series of
positions behind the Donets River.
Falling back from Belgorod, the XI Corps
faced its most dangerous threat from the
huge tank forces massed along the
Belgorod-Kharkov "Rollbahn." Panic
almost ensued on the 10th of August due
to a large tank attack accompanied by
low-flying Soviet fighters, who were
dropping bombs and strafing troops. The
XI Corps Commander personally went to the
rollbahn and gave orders to organize the
defense while within firing range of the
Soviet tanks. German fighters then
appeared, shooting down over a dozen
Russian planes and clearing the skies
over the Corps. Panic was averted and
the situation was restored. The
commander then arranged for an air strike
against the advancing Russian tanks.
