GABES AIRDROME

LT Jack Ilfrey, of the 14th Fighter
Group, was the first P-38 ace of the war.
One of his first missions was a strafing
attack on the Gabes Airdrome.  At 0645
hours on the 2nd of December 1942, his
flight of four took off from Youks-les-
Bains.  approached the Gabes airfield at
0815 hours from 50 feet altitude.  They
encountered 4 Bf109s just taking off and
destroyed two of the vulnerable fighters
and strafed another that was "on the
ground with 8 men around it, trying to
get it to start."

MISSION

Destroy the enemy fighters taking off at
Gabes and then strafe the airfield.

NOTES

This is a day mission.
