THE GRAND STUKA PARTY

On 3 July 1942, the No. 1 Squadron, SAAF,
received word that a Stuka attack was
expected on South African troops holding
part of the defensive line near El
Alamein. No. 274 Squadron (RAF) was to
provide top cover, and the No. 1
Squadron was to concentrate on the
Stukas. At 1840 hours the squadron
scrambled, and soon after 15 Stukas were
seen at 6500 feet with 18 Bf109Fs flying
top cover. The Stukas were just starting
to peel off and begin their bomb runs
when the No. 1 Squadron arrived. The
fight became a wild melee as Stukas
dumped their bombloads and attempted to
escape, but to no avail. 13 Stukas were
destroyed along with one BF109, for no
South African or RAF losses.

MISSION

Take off with your Hurricanes and stop
the Stukas from attacking the South
African positions. Consider the mission
a failure if more than 2 buildings are
destroyed in the target area. Expect
Bf109 as escorts, but remember your
mission is to stop the Stukas and protect
your ground troops.

NOTES

This is a day mission. (1840 hours is
still daylight in the desert in July).
