On August 17-18, 1943, Bomber
Command attacked Peenmunde - a
city on the Baltic coast where
the Germans were conducting
research and construction of the
V-2 rocket. In order to disrupt
the German night fighters as they
took off to intercept, 10 Mos-
quitos were sent on intruder mis-
sions to attack known German
night-fighter airfields and wreak
havoc with their patrols. The
Intruders attacked the major air-
fields at Grove, Jagel, Stadte,
Ardorf, and Westerland on Sylt.
Unfortunately, their timing was
incorrect - most of the German
fighters had already taken off,
bound for Berlin where the Germans
expected an RAF raid to strike. In
fact, only one German aircraft was
downed by the Mosquitos, and one
Mosquito crashed off Sylt. Their
contribution was in fact minimal,
but in other missions, when their
timing was right, the intruder mis-
sions proved highly successful.

ORDERS:
Attack Westerland on Sylt airfield
and then loiter in the area looking
for enemy night-fighters to engage.
