By late 1944, Bennett's Light
Night Striking Force (LNSF) had
become a formidable force. Each
of its Mosquitos could now be
armed with a 4000-lb bomb (the
normal load of a B17, BTW) and
could be flown even to Berlin to
conduct nuisance raids. By the
fall, the Mosquito bombing of
Berlin and other cities had become
a major campaign in its own right.
On 13-14 February, 1945, Bomber
Command attacked Dresden in what
was to be the most advanced example
of bombing during the war. British
assets were so numerous that not
only did the attack on Dresden
consist of TWO Main Force raids, but
a major raid was also conducted on
nearby Bohlen Oil, and the Light
Night Striking Force attacked four
other cities. These attacks, while
considered diversions, were quite
destructive, and by the sheer num-
ber and scattered locales of the
raids, they caused the complete col-
lapse of the German defense system.

ORDERS:
Fly to Magdeburg and bomb the desig-
nated target. Opposition should be
minimal - although the German pre-
occupation with the defense of Berlin
may mean that a few night-fighters
are nearby.....
