Wage Earner

You step onto the seat to get into the
cockpit of your Shooting Star. Your crew
chief makes sure you are buckled in and
tells you that you have a full load of
fuel and ammo aboard and that the
problem you reported with the compass
has been fixed. On signal from you the
crew clears the vicinity as you fire up
the engine and watch the exhaust tube's
temperature gauge rise. You apply the
brakes and check rpms and wave to the
chief standing on the ground ahead of
you. He signals for the men under the
wings to pull the wheel chocks.

You glance over at your leader and
signal with a raise hand you are ready.
You watch as your leader releases his
brakes and begins to taxi out to the
end of the runway. Making sure you are
clear you release the brakes and the
P-80 rolls forward. Using the stick and
wheel brake you take your position
behind the leader waiting at the end of
the runway.

As you turn your oxygen up to 100% and
look up to close the canopy you begin
to hear the air raid siren going off.
Suddenly you notice in the corner of
your eye a large group of black slits
approaching your airfield. Your leader
has already started his take off roll
and without hesitation you crack open
your throttle to emergency power. As
you rush down the runway, you begin to
think that today your going to earn
your pay.
