ESCORT B-17S TO PARIS

On August 16th a force of 170 B-17s was
to hit the main airfield near Paris. They
were escorted by several flights of P-47s,
some of them of the 4th Fighter Group.
Near the target, several dogfights with
FW 190s occured. The P-47 of the 4th's
C.O., Donald Blakeslee, was severly dam-
aged in the fighting. In order to save
him, another pilot of the 4th, Johnny
Goodson, shot down two FW 190s and
chased two others away. Goodson escorted
Blakeslee back to England.
After an inspection of Blakeslee's P-47,
there were 68 hits of cannon shells
found, another proof for the durability
of the P-47.
