YAK ATTACK

On September 14, 1943, the 3rd Guards
Bomber Division launched two attacks
against the Borovskoye airfield. The
reasoning was that the Germans would not
expect a second attack against the same
field but would cover other airstrips.
The 303rd Fighter was tasked to provide
fighter escort and "target isolation"
forces. After the escorts downed two
Fw190s enroute to the target, the bombers
bombed the strip from 2,000 meters at
1733 hours. Numerous fires and explosions
were observed. However, while leaving
some of the Pe-2s were separated and
jumped by 10 FW190s. The target
isolation force joined in and helped
fight off the Focke-Wulfs, as the escort
fighters became involved in bouncing more
FW190s which were attempting to attack
the Pe-2s from above and below. After
a melee in which both sides lost several
aircraft, the Russians, having heavily
damaged the airfield, departed.
