VINNITSA AIRFIELD DEFENSE

At dawn on the 8th of January 1944,
Soviet recon found 27 enemy bombers at
the airfield at Vinnitsa. Twelve Il-2s
of the 451st Ground Attack Regiment and 8
Yaks were assigned the mission. Lt. M.N.
Akimov was in overall command. The
escorts were split into two groups: 5
direct escorts and 3 Yaks in an "attack
group". Approaching at 900 meters, the
twelve Sturmoviks attacked in two waves
of 6 each, with machinegun and cannon
fire followed by frag clusters at 400
meters. Four FW190s were above the
airstrip, along with a Me-110, but were
immediately engaged by the Yaks. The
other group of 5 Yaks attacked a Ju-88
and Ju-52 attempting to take off. The
Soviets then flew off, having destroyed
11 German planes most on the ground) and
having destroyed a gasoline storage area.
